Scarlet was shocked at the rudeness of the young man. She drew back her hand, her nostrils widening with disgust. How dared this youth be so insolent? Didn't he see she was a fine lady?
He was cute, however. Delicious, in fact. Quickly she forgave him as her eyes lingered on his fine features, and she made a mental note to ask Chip bring his friend over for dinner sometime. Surely it was only natural that a step-mother would want to get to know her step-son's friends?
For the moment, however, she couldn't forgive him the arrogance and the rudeness, so she turned back to Chip again. Chip, for his part, was feeling very uncomfortable. He hated meeting Scarlet like this - or in any other way, for that matter. She simply wouldn't take no for an answer. And he wondered what Ace was thinking about her sudden appearance and her behaviour. Would he think she and him had something going on? Was he offended about how he had thrown him off? He was still looking at Ace when Scarlet turned to him and spoke.
"Chip, my dear," she said with a voice that was like sugar. "I was sure to find you from here. You spend so little time at home that it shocks me. And your father misses you so. You must come to supper tonight, I absolutely insist." She was doing her faked British accent again. She felt it was classier than her commonplace Italian accent.
Personally, Chip was mostly annoyed by it.
"I was planning on eating out tonight," he said, trying to avoid saying plainly "no". Scarlet got so much more bitchy when she didn't get her way.
Scarlet didn't even seem to notice he had attempted to say no. She positioned her body in a way that Chip was sure to notice all the curves, and then looked around the room thoughtfully.
"You have one of your little projects going on, Chip?" she asked as her eyes stopped on Ace again. "Who is your friend? Another model? I seem to recall you had one very handsome in Italy." Scarlet smiled to Ace in a seductive manner. "Although I must admit I find this one much the more... appealing to the eye."
Chip felt quite uncomfortable at that remark.

Ace smirked as he observed Scarlet, definite now that he wasn't about to like her. He'd met many women like her, the majority of them co-workers of his mother, upset that a younger woman with less work experience had risen to the top of the company so quickly, looking to piss her off by flirting it up with him. He'd always managed to derail them, though he expected Scarlet to fall the same way.
"Actually, Mrs Tirano, Chip and I have plans for dinner, he probably just didn't want to say anything to you to suggest that work is more important than family." He remained on the couch, looking up at Scarlet, his gaze a challenging one. "Chip is doing a new shoot for Gauge magazine, detailing the current trend in schoolboy attire, you know blazers and the like. We met tonight just to talk about the shoot and decided since we were both hungry that we'd continue our talks over dinner. So I apologize for monopolizing your son's time," he made sure to put extra inflection on the word son, wanting to emphasize that he thought of her as being too old for him, "but in this business work does come before anything else. You wouldn't want to be responsible for screwing this up for him, would you?" He narrowed his eyes, looking displeased and wanting to convey to her that he really didn't appreciate this interruption.

Scarlet stared at Ace icily. She was an airhead, but she did have enough brains to decipher the hidden meaning behind Ace's words. She decided she didn't like him after all. And he would certainly not get an invitation for dinner at the manor (not that her husband's house could be called a manor by any standards, but Scarlet liked to call it that way in her mind). At least, not before she had had the time to forget about his insolence.
Chip, for his part, smiled widely behind Scarlet's back. He decided, on his part, that Ace had just earned himself a nice big kiss for the save.
"No," Scarlet answered, a nasty edge to her voice. "I suppose I wouldn't."
She looked at Chip again, and smiled to him, walking a few steps closer, her hips moving suggestively. She was certain of her charm on him, and now that Ace was obviously brushing her off, she directed all her efforts on Chip again. In her mind she scoffed at Ace, thinking he was probably a poof or something of the sort, for not appreciating her beauty. At least Chip had an eye for women, she thought as she smiled to him with all the redness of her painted lips.
"I am sorry to interrupt your important meeting, Ciro darling," she said, having assumed falsely that Chip felt the use of the name Ciro to endear her to him. "But your father and I do miss you so. Why, we have hardly seen you since we came back from Italy."
And there's a very good reason, too, you know, Chip noted sarcastically in his mind though outwards he kept his fake smile.
"Perhaps I might come with you to this dinner," she said, fluttering her eyelashes. "I promise I wouldn't be of trouble," she purred with the look of an innocent little angel - though Chip was more inclined to think of a harpy.
He smiled quickly.
"Ahh, tempting, Scarlet, but no," he said, having finally found his voice again and terrified of the thought of having dinner with Scarlet and Ace both. "I'm afraid we wouldn't be much company to you, and besides, father will miss you."
Scarlet wrinkled her nose a little, though she attempted to brush off the unpleasant expression quickly. Chip knew he had hit right to the spot with that one. Mario and Scarlet didn't get along anymore, and that Scarlet jumped on every opportunity to dine without her husband. Chip was relieved to notice it took a while for Scarlet to come up with an answer. It meant he'd probably won that one.

Now that supper had been brought up, Ace found himself feeling rather hungry. He just didn't know what Chip liked to eat. Deciding that Chip probably wouldn't mind if he butted in before Scarlet replied, Ace got up from the couch and walked over to stand beside Chip.
"We never decided where to eat, did we? Have you eaten out much since moving here? There's this super trendy restaurant a few blocks down the road that happens to be my favourite, called Ocean." Ace knew that if Scarlet cared at all about important, trendy places around town, she would have heard about Ocean. The restaurant was one of the fanciest in the city, catering to the big spending business crowd. Dinner for two usually priced close to $200, unless you decided to spring for a bottle of really expensive wine. There were never any children there so the atmosphere was always quiet and private. "I know the owner, so he can get us a table right away, no need for reservation." The restaurant was reservation only, but Ace wasn't lying when he'd mentioned knowing the owner. His mother and her boss always scheduled company dinners and lunches there which always ended up costing their company in the thousands, so they were prefered customers. He knew the two of them would be eating dinner there tonight and wouldn't mind company, so he figured he might as well make the offer to Chip. Anything to make Scarlet that much more jealous after all, and he did want to introduce Chip to his mother.

Chip raised an eyebrow to the suggestion. He knew, as well as Scarlet, what place Ace was talking about - well, he hadn't lived in the town much but he had it as his habit to inform himself about all the trendy and expensive places within the week of his arrival to any city. He wondered if Ace was just throwing it in to annoy Scarlet - how could he possibly arrange a reservation for them that quickly?
Scarlet, herself, looked even more huffed though also slight interest sparked in her mind. This boy appeared to be well connected. Perhaps she might forgive him his insolence after all. Be a poof or not, he might be turned. They were all just in need of a real woman to show them the good stuff, weren't they? Scarlet liked to believe so. She raised her eyebrows and looked at Ace as though she'd only now really seen him for the first time.
"Ocean? Really, now?" she said in an admiring tone, and Chip knew immediately Ace had made a mistake. Now she'd be all over him like a python over dinner. "Prey tell, how have you come acquainted with the owner of such a fine establishment?"
Chip rolled his eyes behind Ace's back and made a face.

Ace looked at Scarlet as though he thought her rude to question him, wanting to convey that he didn't appreciate her earlier attitude and wasn't about to return her friendliness to him simply because she thought him worthy of her time now that she knew he had connections. "Not that it's really any of your business," Ace replied, his tone still icy, "but my mother has been a preferred customer there for the past five years, due to the business she brings in from her company, Holt and Crawford. As far as myself, my mother and I dine there at least once a week, provided she's in town. We like the quiet, upscale attitude, and that it's just across the street from our condo. She always introduces me to her business contacts, so I've known Roxford, that's the owner, for the past four years. Every now and then he'll sit with us for a glass of wine to catch up." Surprisingly enough, none of that was a lie. Ace's mother did have many contacts in the city and always ensured that she introduced Ace. She might not be around quite so much, but she always made sure there were many people around he could go to if he ever needed anything.

Scarlet was quite impressed, and ignored Ace's icy tone. Oh, they all pretended to be offended so easily, and in the end it was all just an act. And what did he have to be offended about, in any case. He had insulted her first, as was her view. So she kept smiling.
"Indeed!" she said. Of course, she wasn't half as impressed over realising that Ace had little real family connections, but it was something to know he was well to do and apparently well connected. She smiled and went closer to him. He was a boy only, after all. Surely he could be persuaded to see things her way. "Perhaps we shall meet there one day, then," he purred. "I come there sometimes as well."
"That's funny," Chip put in at that point, a bit icily as well, "father doesn't much go for that kind of places."
Scarlet shrugged.
"Your father and I do enjoy different things on occation," she said, and then turned to Ace again, smiling. "Well, you must be a more enterprising young man than you appear," she said, just a little pointedly. "Perhaps we shall meet at a social function or other as well. Who was your mother again? If she is so well connected, I must know her."
Chip frowned a bit. Scarlet was attempting to undermine Ace by trying to make him say he was not of especially well connected family. Families were, after all, important to their line of business. Chip knew his father considered himself to be a nobleman of sorts, though there was not a drop of genuine noble blood in his veins.

Ace found it hard to keep from laughing at Scarlet's comments, wondering if she had any idea what she sounded like. This woman obviously had issues.
"Perhaps we should meet there sometime. It might be interesting." As he thought more about it, Ace actually wanted to meet Scarlet there and introduce her to his mother, who he knew would be amused be her twice as much as he was. "I doubt you'd know my mother, unless you know people in the advertising and marketing business." Ace shrugged, wondering what her deal was. Maybe Italian parents were just weird like that.

Scarlet seemed content to think herself superior. Chip rolled his eyes behind her back again. He felt tempted to remind to her that she wasn't exactly a countess or anything. But he held his tongue. She still had some influence over his father, and his father held tight to the old values. There was a whole other world down there, and Chip felt a cloud of depression hang over him at the thought that he was a part of it, deeper than he ever cared to admit.
"We should get going," he said to Ace, wanting to break it off and get rid of Scarlet.
Scarlet looked at him, feeling a little huffed that he would interrupt them so. He should have had better manners!
"Why, certainly," she said, however, knowing that lingering longer would have appeared too desperate. She looked at Ace again, smiling her sugar-filled smile. "Perhaps we will meet indeed. I shall be sure to arrange some time for meeting your mother."

Ace smiled to Chip, nodding his head at the suggestion of their heading out for supper. He looked to Scarlet again, smirking. "Mmm yes, my mother would love to meet you, actually. She just simply adores women of your, nature. You'd get along famously." He looked back at Chip, coming off as much more friendly now. "Are we off, then? I'm quite hungry."

"Yes," Chip said determinately. "Good afternoon, Scarlet. I'll see you... later."
He reserved for himself to know how much later that would be. This evening he was hoping to spend out of his father's house as late as possible.
Scarlet smiled graciously, completely oblivious to the fact Ace was messing with her.
"Certainly," she said. "I don't want to keep you." It was a blatant lie, but she would rather die than show how excellently the couple had managed to thwart her desire to get Chip's company for herself that evening. "Good afternoon."
And she nodded to them both, and sailed out of the room. Chip watched her go and after the door closed after her, he looked at Ace, relief obvious on his face.
"Oh, thank God," he said and smirked. "Or thank you, whichever. She tends to get me cornered."

Ace smirked, amused by the whole thing. "Oh, it was nothing. I actually enjoy dealing with women like her, I've had to fend off my fair share. Mom likes to bring me to company parties now and then, you can just imagine the reaction of some of her older co-workers." He grinned, before leaning against the door. "So, are we actually going out for supper then? That was sort of a half-lie, what I told her. I can't walk in and get a reservation anytime I want, but my mother has a reservation with her boss in ten minutes and they wouldn't mind company, plus I'd like you to meet her. You'll love her, she's nothing like Scarlet." Ace winked, placing his hand on the doorknob. He hoped Chip really would be up for supper.

Chip was slightly nervous of the thought that Ace wanted him to meet his mother. Not that he didn't like the boy, he was just wondering that perhaps this was going too serious too fast. But then, what harm could it do - it wasn't like Ace was going to introduce him as his boyfriend, was he?
Was he? Chip eyed Ace as he walked to the door after him, smiling and not showing his slight hesitation.
"Why, sure, we can go," he said with a shrug. "I'm hungry anyways. I had been planning on going to the Reflections tonight for a bit, but I suppose a classy supper first wouldn't hurt."
He grinned and winked.

Ace looked back as Chip as they left his studio and the building, a smile on his face. "Reflections is a good place, I go there every now and then. Sparky, the lesbian I mentioned earlier, we usually go with some friends of ours, though the majority of the time now we end up going to System Soundbar, which is more of a rave club. We kind of go back and for every few weeks, actually. Though my favourite club right now to go to is Plastique, the uber trendy one. It reminds me the most of Europe, which is why I like it. And just in case you're wondering, I do have a fake id, but I also know most of the club owners and bouncers, I wasn't lying when I said my mom knows a lot of people." They reached the bottom floor, heading outside to the street.
"In case you're worried about my wanting you to meet my mother, rest assured it has nothing to do with dating, or anything. I just have the greatest mother in the world and it's almost as though I enjoy showing her off as much as she enjoys showing me off. Kind of odd, our relationship." Ace grinned, walking besides Chip and enjoying the late afternoon breeze. The majority of people were just starting to get off work now, so the streets were beginning to fill up. This section of downtown always had nice people to look at.

Chip smiled to what Ace was telling him. He and his mother seemed to get along well. He was struck by a slight pang of pain at the thought of never having a mother - never having a family, once again. It was his one main regret.
"I'll be happy to meet her," he said lightly, however, shaking away such thoughts. He wondered if he could ask Ace with him to the Reflections that night. Would the boy come? Did he want to go with him? Would it be too much like a date?
[[will we play through the dinner or do we want to skip to the end of the "date" soon?]]
