Ace brushed his fingers over Princess' arm, watching to see how Starlight would react. He could see her tense up even further the moment she'd heard the other's voice and a grin sprung to his lips. Just as he was about to say something though, he felt Teddy press up against him and he turned to look at the other boy's face. His expression caught Ace off guard and he simply stared back at Teddy, his mind unbiddingly pulling up some deeply buried memories that made him tense up himself, looking back over at Starlight. What the hell was his problem? This was only Teddy messing with him, carrying their joke a bit further. It wasn't anything for him to get nerve-wracked about.
Princess was concentraing so much on Starlight that she didn't feel Ace's grip on her arm tighten, nor did she feel his body go a little rigid. She was too intent on winning this little stare-down with Starlight. As she heard the other speak she laughed a little, shaking her head.
"Such bitterness in your voice, Star. What have I ever done to you?" Her lips breaking apart into a grin she put her other hand on her hip, leaning a little against Ace. She heard Sweetheart mention that she was leaving but didn't bother looking back, she didn't really consider the other girl to be worth her time in addressing.

Ace's reaction caught Teddy off guard. He could feel the blonde tense up and it worried him. Raising a brow, he mouthed the words "Are you ok?".
The sound of Sweetheart's voice barely reached his ears, but Teddy knew it was her speaking. That voice would never leave his memory. Turning to look at her, he half smiled. "Wait." Untangling himself from Ace, Teddy walked up to her.
"I don't feel like being here when things get bad." There was a soft smile on his face. As he spoke, he offered his arm to her. "Shall we?"

Sweetheart halted at Teddy's voice. She looked at him, swallowing a little. She hadn't even realised how much she had missed him. When he offered her his arm, smiling, she couldn't help blushing just a little.
"Why... certainly," she said with a soft laugh as she accepted his arm. She felt a little tingly all over and didn't know what to say. He has really grown up, she thought to herself, recalling how he had used to be. Like Dan. Oh, she didn't want to think about her brother. He made her worry so with how he had changed.
Meanwhile, Starlight was fighting her own inner battle. She could see Ace and Princess were about to gang up on her. She would have wanted to ask Sweetheart to wait, but stopped herself when she saw Teddy untangle himself from Ace and go to her. She knew how much Sweetheart had wanted to talk with Teddy, to renew their friendship, and she didn't want to interrupt it.
So, this was her fight. She met Princess's eyes coolly.
"Never mind," she said and put up a sweet smile. "So, you and Mr. Sweden an item yet?"

Ace didn't reply to Teddy's question, not having an answer good enough to give. He clearly wasn't alright; for whatever reason Teddy's direct contact had triggered something buried deep in his mind. Now that the thoughts had surfaced he was having a hard time pushing them back down. But that story wasn't exactly something he could share with his friend, especially not in the middle of a busy school hallway on their first day. So instead he ignored the question, feeling relieved when Teddy left with Sweetheart.
He was jolted back into reality by Starlight's comment and without waiting to give Princess a chance to answer, he jumped in.
"After the mistake I made with you, I don't do relationships anymore. They're a waste of my time." His tone was more icy and cold then he'd meant it to be, realizing too late that he was taking out his frustration at himself on Starlight. That had been a bad habit he'd gotten into while they were still together, one that he'd never been happy about.
Princess watched Ace respond to Starlight, hearing that same icy edge that always made her wonder just what was going on inside his head. As soon as he finished speaking he held eye contact with Starlight, though she noticed him bite his lower lip, a sure sign that the blond was upset over something, and she was sure that whatever the issue was, it probably didn't directly have to do with Starlight.

Starlight drew up her chin, hurt by Ace's words and unable to see there was something wrong with him. He had always been good at hiding himself from everyone, and Starlight felt herself too betrayed to want to look any deeper into his eyes.
"I'm glad I saved the womankind from your ruthfulness, then," she snapped back, tears choking her though she fought to keep them in her throat. How could he be so cruel!

Ace knew from experience that judging from the tone in Starlight's voice, his words had really upset her. He looked away, trying not to let the guilt he felt overtake him. He wasn't quite sure why he went so far out of his way to treat her badly, but he did and there was nothing he could do about it now. He certainly wasn't going to apologize to her.
Princess noticed both of them become quite upset and sighed to herself, shaking her head slightly. High school was always so dramatic. Shifting her attention back to Starlight, Princess decided it was time to try and play the peacemaker. Well, her version of it.
"Don't you think you've caused Ace enough aggravation for one morning, Star? Perhaps you ought to get to class. I don't think an excuse of pining away after your old boyfriend would pass."

Princess's words jolted Starlight like an electric bolt. She was deeply wounded, mostly because her words hit home so accurately. She would have wanted to say something acid to her, to protect herself from the pain, but suddenly she simply didn't have any strength left for it. She shook her head to Princess with a pitying expression on her face.
"You make me sad," she said to her and then looked at Ace, a true sadness in her eyes. "I hope you will be happy with your choices," she only said, and then she started walking away.

Princess smirked at Starlight's defeated attitude, about to reply back to her when she felt Ace grab her arm, keeping her where she was. She turned to face him and saw that he wasn't sporting his usual amused expression and she looked curiously at him.
"What's eating you? And don't say nothing, because I know you better than that." All traces of her previous nasty attitude gone, Princess leaned next to him on the lockers, her expression one of concern and worry.
Ace sighed, watching Starlight walk off down the hall. He wondered if every day would go like this one had, with bitterness and hurtful words. Why couldn't they both just get over each other and move on peacefully? He supposed the majority of the blame lay on his shoulders, since he started most of their problems. But he'd never be willing to take all the responsibility for their having gone wrong. Nothing was ever entirely his fault.
Princess prodded Ace with her elbow, sensing that he'd slipped off somewhere in his head. Finally he looked down at her, surprising her by reaching out and pulling her into a tight embrace, kissing her neck and just clinging to her. She didn't see him like this very often, but she knew him well enough to know that when he was acting like this, the only thing to do was let him be clingy, and eventually he'd sort himself out.
Ace put his mouth to her ear, wanting to take advantage of their first period free class. "Let's go for a walk." Pulling away from her he opened his locker, putting his bag inside and motioning for her to do the same. Then he started walking to the main door leading outside, taking her hand in his.

Starlight glanced back over her shoulder as she walked to the next corner, just in time to see Ace wrap his arms around Princess. Tears filled her eyes and she escaped around the corner, not wanting to see anything more, not wanting to feel anything more. She felt bad for the entire scene. She didn't want to argue with him. But why did he have to be such a bastard whenever they met? She would have given anything if they could have just talked it all out, but all he would ever say was insults or hurtful words, and her pain was too great to sit them quietly through.
And they would share the same locker neighbourhood for the entire semester! She wiped some tears from her eyes. Fate was so cruel!

Teddy had to admit that he was thankful Sweetheart had accepted his offer. No matter how many years passed, he still couldn't forget about the way he once felt about the girl. She used to be all that mattered to him. What had happened? He had changed a lot, that was sure. But she... she was still the same girl he remembered. And we was thankful for that.
As the child hood sweethearts continued to walk, a smile came upon Teddy's face. "So..." Blue eyes were focused on the beauty by his side. "It's been awhile. And I must say, I've missed you."

Sweetheart felt her heart thud in her heart as she walked beside Teddy, forgetting entirely about looking for her locker and the fact that her Psych class was supposed to begin soon. When he spoke, she hung on to his every word, filled with warmth as he looked at her.
"It's been awhile. And I must say, I've missed you."
She blushed gently over the cheeks and lowered her eyes shyly.
"I've missed you too, Teddy," she said softly and smiled sadly. "I wish we'd kept in touch better."
Her mind drifted into the fact that their final year of school was now beginning. After this year... what ever would happen? She had her dreams, but the pressures from home made her think they were impossible to catch. And there was Teddy, whom she was afraid to lose permanently after the year was over.
"How have you been?" she asked him, anxious to shoo the disagreeable thoughts and hoping to hear something about his life. To begin renewing their friendship, she added in her private mind.

Teddy smiled at her words. He was hoping she would say that. "Me too. But you know teenagers, we just kind of float from one group of people to the next. I've had my head wedged up my ass for quite some time." He winked.
He pondered Sweetheart's question for a brief moment. "I've been good, I suppose. It's just that life can get rough sometimes between work, taking care of my mom, and now school." He gave a slight shrug. "But hey, that's life." As always, the boy smiled. "How about you? And be honest."

Sweetheart had to giggle just a little at his graphic metaphor about where his ass had been. She hardly ever used such coarse language herself, being brought up as a nice girl as she was.
But she grew serious when he spoke about how he had been, listening carefully. She got at once worried when he said things had been rough on him. She felt a sudden urge to protect him from all evil things, but felt silly at the thought. She was the one everyone else needed to protect, not the other way around. What could she ever do, but be a comforting shoulder on which to cry?
She caught a smile on her lips, however, when he asked her about how she had been.
"Oh, I've been all right," she said. "We just came back from this lovely summer in Italy, visiting my father's parents." Then she grew more serious and looked down. "I do worry about my brother, though. You remember him, don't you, Teddy? You saw him once or twice when we were really small, I think. He was actually a worse rascal than you ever when he was young. He's been to boarding school and then university all these years to get his Master's Degree. When he came back home, I thought he would be happy, for getting to start up a new life and everything, but he's just got worse." She felt a few tears in her eyes. "I don't know what's wrong with him, Teddy, but he's not at all like he used to be. He's so moody and he never smiles anymore. I'm so worried over him."
She wiped off a tear that rolled down her cheek. She got so emotional when she thought about her brother.

Teddy listened tentaively as Sweetheart spoke. When asked if he remembered Dandy, he nodded his head. It had been a long time since he last saw the boy. He wondered how old he must be now.
His mind wandered briefly on the thought of Sweetheart's brother, but came back to reality shortly after. Teddy's heart skipped a beat when he saw a tear roll down the girl's eye. In an instant he stopped in his tracks and pulled Sweetheart into a comforting embrace.

Sweetheart drew in a sharp breath as Teddy pulled her into an embrace, but she was not frightened. On the contrary, she clung to him without even thinking it any further, and pressed her head against his chest. He was taller than she had remembered. But being close to him helped. She felt better.
