As Sweetheart sat up and spoke, Teddy's heart stopped for a moment. He figured she would have said that. But it wouldn't hurt as much if it wasn't her... if it wasn't his fault.
Looking around, he forced back the tears that were threatening to show. He sat up and grabbed a blanket, covering Sweetheart with it. Another blanket was wrapped around his waist as he got off of the bed. He retrieved the girl's clothes and brought them to her.
He gently placed the clothing next to her on the bed and sat down. "I'm sorry, Sweetheart." His eyes never once looked directly at her. He couldn't. It hurt too much.

Sweetheart wrapped the blanket around her and looked up to Teddy as he brought her clothes to her and sat down. She had tears in her eyes. She didn't want it to end this way, she was so confused and felt so small and vulnerable.
"Oh, Teddy," she said and threw her arms around the boy's neck, pulling in close to an embrace. "It isn't your fault. I'm... I'm sorry." She sobbed a little, pressing her head against his shoulder. "I love you, Teddy," she said quietly.

Teddy was shocked as Sweetheart hugged him, crying into his shoulder. The tears in his eyes were beginning to show as he wrapped his arms around the girl, hugging her to him. Her words, however, made his heart skip a beat.
I love you, Teddy...
Those words had never been exchanged between the two friends. Sure, they both felt a mutual connection, but they had never actually uttered those three words. He wanted to smile, he normally would have, but right now... they made the tears fall from his eyes. Reaching up with one hand, Teddy hastily wiped the tears away, pretending that they had never fallen. His heart was breaking right now, but he wouldn't show it.
"I love you, too..." He did. He always had. Probably always would. But hearing the words fall from his lips caused him even more pain. They could never be together, and he knew it. They worked well as friends, but they could never be a couple. They were too different, he was too immature and not ready for a commitment. He'd only hurt her. More than he already had.

Sweetheart's heart skipped a beat at his answer. She had not meant to say it herself, it had slipped from her, but to hear him speak the words back made her head reel. Somehow, she had always known, of course... but it was different to hear those words than to know they were implied. She held her head there, against Teddy's shoulder, feeling comforted by his embrace and the closeness of his body. She sobbed a little but it faded slowly.
She tried to think clearly. Yes, she knew she had sinned. And doubly so... but... it had felt so good. So right. Teddy had been so wonderful, and she had experienced things she never thought were possible. How could this be wrong?
But then, her faith told her it was wrong. Did not eating chocolate feel wonderful to a dieter, and yet it was wrong? She was so confused, she knew she couldn't handle this right now, she couldn't think this through right now. She would need time to sort it out.
Sweetheart's heart was still thudding and tears stayed in her eyes. But his words had given her new hope. And then again, there came a new insecurity as she looked up and noticed how distressed Teddy looked like. What had all this meant to him? Was she just a... a... she couldn't bear to think the word. She swallowed and looked up at Teddy with large, nearly pleading eyes.
"What... what are we going to do?"
[[Oh, and Sweetheart also should be home by six... do you suppose we've gone far past that time already? lol yeah, I'm planning on her being late too]]

[lol Yeah, we can say it's past that time.]
Teddy looked down at Sweetheart and forced the worried look from his face. He had to be strong, or at least pretend to be.
"I'm not sure." He ran a hand through his hair, while his free arm remained wrapped around the girl. "I guess we'll just have to take things one step at a time. I mean, yeah, we rushed into this, and for that I am extremely sorry. But you know I'd never hurt you. You're not just another notch on my belt, Sweetheart. You're so much more than that." He looked away for a minute before looking at her again. "I would love to be with you. But...." Again, his blue eyes trailed off. "I'm not right for you."
There was obvious sadness in his voice, and his sapphire eyes glistened. He did want to be with her, but they were so different. She was classy, sophisticated, and he was... well... trash.

Sweetheart swallowed, her eyes remaining fixed into Teddy's face as he looked away. She didn't understand. If he loved her, and wanted her, why couldn't they be together? It felt so right to her. As she saw the glistening of his eyes, she tightened her hold of him and raised her other hand up, to caress his cheek, to tell him she was there. She didn't know what else to say, her own mixed feelings pressed on her heart and made it difficult for her to even breathe, let alone speak.
"But you are," she finally said, with a trembling voice, wrapping her both arms around his neck. "You... you could be." Her voice died away, she was so afraid he would push her away, for reasons she didn't understand. She only knew she loved him, any differences between them melted away and there was only the two of them, and the wonderful moment they had shared. Her religious guilt let away as she realised he was saying goodbye.

"Sweetheart..." He didn't want to pull away from her, but that is exactly what he did. The white sheet hung from his waist as he paced by the side of the bed.
"I never expected things to go this far..." He wasn't looking anywhere in particular as he spoke. In fact, he wasn't quite sure if he was talking to Sweetheart or himself. "Our worlds are so different. It'd never work. Your family has never liked me, and well, can't say I blame 'em. You're a classy girl and you deserve someone who can give you everything you deserve. I have nothing. Hell, I can barely afford to get by." Now he was looking at her, a pleading expression on his face. "Am I making any sense?" He shook his head. "I'm not good enough for you. Your family knows that, along with everyone else. Sometimes it takes much more than love to make a relationship work. We have all odds against us."

Sweetheart listened, but she didn't want to believe. She swallowed, and sat down at the edge of the bed, holding the blanket tightly about her. She blushed a little at the sight of him without the sheet covering him, but then recalled she had seen it all already. It distracted her, nevertheless.
"You're making sense, yes," she said quietly, looking down. Then she lifted her head and looked at Teddy, tears in her eyes. "Listen, Teddy, you're talking like I want you to marry me right away. But it's... it's not like that. We have time... to work everything out. If we... if we want to..."
She noticed she didn't know what she was saying, so she stopped for a moment, holding her head. She had to keep this together now. She had to think. Love conquers all. He was wrong. Love was enough. It had to be. Else, all she believed in was false.
"I don't need a mansion," she said quietly, her eyes to the floor as she didn't know where else to look. "I don't... I don't need fancy carpets and a six-bedroom-house. And even if you don't own anything, Teddy, you have a lot to offer." She blushed as she spoke, it was difficult to get the words out, but she wanted to. She couldn't believe he thought so little of himself. Or so highly of her. "You have a good heart. My family will see that. They must, through my eyes, if nothing else."
She swallowed and got up, facing Teddy directly now. She wasn't about to let go of this relationship just like that. It would break her heart if she did. She believed that was a point she had made. But she didn't want to pull him in for mere duty. She must make that point as well.
"I... I don't care about the odds. I would like to give it a try. Because I love you. But..." She glanced down and bit her lip for a moment. "I don't want to force you into anything. You're right. We should take it one step at a time. We both must... think about this."

Teddy listened quietly. His eyes were fixed on the floor as well, and he didn't dare look up until Sweetheart stood. Now that he was looking the girl in the eye, he felt incredibly... vulnerable. If he didn't take the time to think things through, then he would no doubt jump into something that would only end in pain. For both of them.
"I do want to be with you..." He reached out, pulling her into an embrace. "But let's not jump into this...." His took a deep breath. "First we should get your family used to me again. Let them get a chance to see that I only have the best of intentions, and allow them to warm up to the idea of you and me. Then we can go ahead and take the next step." He gave her a quick squeeze. "I'm not just going to leave you."

Sweetheart nodded and came into his arms again, squeezing her arms around his neck and pressing her head against his shoulder. She believed him. She believed him to know what to do. If he said he must make her family know him better, then that was probably what they should do.
She was just about to tell him so, when her eyes went very wide at the thought of her family. Her family! Goodness!
"Oh my God!" she said and pulled away, looking at Teddy. "I've forgotten the dinner! What's the time? Oh my God, my father's going to kill me!"

Teddy was a bit taken back by Sweetheart's sudden outburst. He took a moment to catch his breath and then turned to look at the alarm clock. "6:35"
His eyes fell on Sweetheart. "What time were you supposed to be there?"

Sweetheart covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes even wider, if that was possible.
"Half an hour ago," she said miserably. "Father was so keen on it and all... he wanted us to have a real family dinner at home, with Dan and everything, because he didn't come yesterday, and father was really upset, and... oh, Teddy, what am I going to do?"
She wasn't sure now what made her more upset - the thought that she'd missed dinner, the thought that she and Teddy were where they were in their relationship or the thought that she had just committed a terrible sin. Her head started reeling.

Teddy was slightly confused, he didn't understand the severity of the situation. Granted, he knew just how insane fathers could be, but that was something he chose to not think about.
He shrugged. "Just go late and make up some excuse." He shifted his weight. "Say we were watching a movie and lost track of time, or something."

Sweetheart shook her head.
"You don't understand, Teddy," she said. "If he finds out I've been with you the whole time and forgot about the dinner, he'll take it all out on you. I... I'll say I was shopping and forgot the time." Then she realised she didn't have any items she might have said she had been shopping for. "No, I'll tell him I was at the library. He'll believe that. I just need to call Dan, so he won't tell them where I was. If he hasn't already. Where's my cell phone?"
She recalled having a handbag with her. Had she left it in the living room?

Teddy smiled a little. Sweetheart was something else. Which made him very happy.
He walked to the other side of the bed and picked up his pants and boxers, slipping back into them. "Uhm.. anywhere between here and the front room, I guess..." He zipped his pants.
