history: It was evident early on that Thomas was using kid gloves when handling Jade. He seemed afraid that she’d end up with a broken bone or wind up with some horrendous scar. Their mother would just chuckle and shake her head, telling him that the girl was just as sturdy as their son; maybe even more so. Nothing anyone said seemed to change his mind. What none of them knew was that while Thomas loved having a son and daughter both, he had plans in mind for his daughter and worried about something happening that upset those plans. While looks aren’t everything, he knew, it was certainly an added bonus. After all what hockey player wouldn’t want to come home to a pretty little thing? Yes, Jade would marry a professional hockey player when she was old enough. It was so set in his mind that he didn’t realize that it was entirely possible that she could fall in love with someone else and marry them.

Shortly before the children turned two, Thomas retired from playing hockey professionally and moved his family here. On the twins’ second birthday he introduced them both to ice skating, while their mother introduced them to dancing. Both began taking ice skating and dance lessons. Thomas only agreed to letting Jasper take ballet lessons because it helped with skating and keeping one’s balance.

For her fourth birthday Jade was signed up for figure skating lessons and she loved every minute of it. While it wasn’t hockey, she still enjoyed getting to spend more time on the ice.

A little over five years after they moved their mother died when the twins were seven. It had been suddenly and unexpected, a heart attack claimed her one afternoon while she was driving to pick the children up from school. She crashed into a telephone pole. Doctors assured them that she never felt a thing.

Jasper quit ballet, claiming it to be too girly and emerged himself in hockey full-time. Jade retreated into herself. She was like a ghost of her former self. The only time she seemed to show even a spark of her old self was while skating, so Thomas decided that maybe playing hockey for a little while would somehow help. With all of the padding, he wasn't worried about her getting injured, which was more than he could say for her figure skating, which he constantly worried about. Until she was twelve Jade played hockey alongside her brother. More than once Thomas heard the coach comment on how talented Jade was and how she better than just about every boy in the league. While Thomas was proud that his daughter was really that good, he firmly believed that no guy; at least no young man who would be playing professionally would want a woman in his life that could be just as good as he is or better. So Thomas decided Jade could no longer play hockey. For a few months she gave her father the silent treatment, furious that she couldn’t play any longer when Jasper could. She eventually got past it though, in large part due to her father letting her take dance lessons five days a week now and in hip hop/alternative no less.

history: From the moment he was born, Jasper’s father had a plan in mind for him. The boy was to follow in his footsteps. Never once did Thomas ever even consider that Jasper might have other dreams or goals in mind. Until his mother passed away when he and Jade were seven, Jasper and his twin sister were happy and allowed to just be children. Yes he played hockey every winter and he skated daily. But it didn’t consume him. He didn’t live and breathe for the game. After she was gone though the child plunged himself head first into hockey. He began playing not only during winter but also in the summer. Just so he could play during the summer and have access to an ice rink at all times Thomas opened a hockey rink, The Ice Box. Every summer the rink has leagues for children to be a part of and play in. Thomas didn’t stop to think that playing this game was Jasper’s way of dealing with the lose of his mother, or even his way of not dealing with it. Thomas just saw it as the boy becoming more focused.

Not long before the children turned eight Thomas was offered a chance to coach a professional hockey team. He leaped at the chance. Finding the best nanny possible he left the twins for weeks, sometimes even months at a time while working with his team and traveling to games. Both adjusted to the change without any problems.

history: Nothing extraordinary has ever happened to Maverick. His childhood was as normal as could be and honestly a bit on the dull side. His parents are fairly well off, but not to the point of his cousin. Maverick has always wished for more. He wants to be the best. To be the richest. To have it all. If someone gets hurt along the way, oh well doesn’t matter. That’s his philosophy. He fully believes in the saying “it’s every man for himself” and it tends to show. He is the kind of guy who isn’t looking for love or someone to grow old with. He doesn’t necessarily believe in it. He does believe in appearances though and fully intends to marry. What he wants is a trophy wife. Who cares if she knows anything or has dreams or aspirations. Just so long as she looks good. That’s all that matters to him.

Perhaps the only thing Maverick has ever shown any real interest and drive in is sports. In a way he almost lives for it. He loves competitions and proving to not only himself but everyone else that he is the best of the best. Of course when you have an opponent like Ace it’s hard to come across as the best when he’s every bit as good as you are, quite possibly even better. That hasn’t stopped Maverick though. If anything it has pushed him harder.

history: The Colepepper’s our one of the oldest families in town. It was Ryan’s great, great, great grandfather who had the gothic style family castle built. There are many rumors circulating around about the castle. The most famous of which is about a skull kept in a velvet box in the library to protect the house and all that live inside.

On more than one overcast night there has been a teenager who has dared to creep up the long cobbled driveway and tried to sneak a look at the ‘babbling idiot’ that resides within. Some same he is a man, slightly misshapen with only half a brain, others claim he is a demon that possess the house and all who live there are his for all eternity. In reality he is simply a man who has a severe speech problem, a clubbed foot and deals with downs syndrome. He is the nephew of the housekeeper. Johnny has lived in the castle with his Aunt Claude since he was fourteen, he is now almost twenty-nine. Ryan is accustomed to Johnny’s unusual ways and how he speaks (often in grunts and slurred words). Johnny seems to only add to the castle’s unusual air and gives the children and teenagers something else to talk about. Ryan ignores it all. He knows the truth and that’s all that matters to him. Others will believe what they want, so he doesn’t bother trying to dispel the tales spun about the castle.

His mother Jannie also adds to the castle’s enchantment. She hasn’t left the castle in ten years. Choosing instead to remain in one of the towers that overlooks the massive garden in the backyard. When her husband died ten years ago Jannie suffered a breakdown and it was all Claude could do to keep her sane enough when a doctor came by, to checkup on her, to keep her from being committed. The rest of the staff was let go and Claude took on full responsibility for not only the entire castle but Jannie and Ryan as well. Johnny helped out where he could, mostly in tending to the yard, which he proved to have an unnatural ability at getting flowers to grow better than they ever have. Even though Jannie is for the most part past her breakdown she still refuses to go anywhere or see anyone. She prefers the solitude she found within her husband’s family castle and enjoys spending her days reading and listening to classical music.

It was an interesting childhood for Ryan. First losing one parent in a plane crash and than losing the other when she retreated within herself. Before that though Ryan was a happy and carefree child. Often spending his days outside in the hedge maze in the backyard. When cooped up inside he would try his best to find the secret passageways that he had heard tell of. He found two or three, but has not yet discovered them all. As a child he loved walking through the secret passageways pretending he was an explorer searching for a lost civilization.

Ryan has attended the private school since kindergarten. Though he has heard just about every possible rumor or speculation made about the rival public school he doesn’t believe a word of it. Especially since most of what he’s heard has come from his cousin’s mouth. The same person he’s heard spouting tales about his family’s castle and what goes on there, something Ryan truly wishes Maverick wouldn’t do. Though he often does go along with whatever Maverick is doing, rarely does Ryan actually agree with what his cousin is doing. The two have never seen eye to eye and it would honestly suit Ryan just fine if Maverick decided to move elsewhere once school is finished.

history: Blaze had a happy and fairly laid-back childhood. His parents never pushed him to anything or really do anything. They always expected that their child would grow up to do whatever made him happy. Neither wanted anything else but for him to be happy, no matter what he chose to do.

When Blaze was eight he took an interest in sports. It wasn’t much of anything to begin with, just playing basketball and soccer at recess. That summer though he all but begged to go to a camp for soccer. His parents readily agreed, delighted to see him taking an interest in something other than video games. Within the first week he was hooked and couldn’t get enough of running all over the field, chasing the ball, hoping to score a goal and trying to keep the other team from scoring. He began playing in junior (children’s?) leagues every spring and quite often every summer. It didn’t take long for him to become more than an acquaintance of some of the best players their age, including Ace and Chase. While he isn’t as close to them as they are to each other, he’s still loyal and would do just about anything for either of them.
